spray painting (blending in old with new paint)?
hi, i have spray painted a black panel on my motorcycle and the finsh is nice and shiny. but whats bugging me is where i have masked taped the panel, a STEP is visible.
basically, imagine you masked up an area, used grey primer then finished with the black coat…you then remove the masking tape. what i have is a step created by the layers of new respray and also visible is a thin line of grey primer which must of creeped under the masking tape.
question is: ‘how do i blend the new respray with the old paint’ what equipment to i need? any techniques?
i appreciate and welcome all input and past experiences doing this sort of thing.

First you have to sand out the ridge using 320 water sandpaper. Next you have to very carefully reprime the area and fine sand primer, then apply your finish coat by “flashing in” the area. It’s a very tricky technique to master, but basically you just “fog” the area where it joins the old paint. Practise on an old piece of metal first. Anytime you mask an area, you have to be aware of ‘Seams” caused by the tape, and where they end up. good luck
