Motorcycle Gas Tank Repair Rust
What do I start with when putting a motorcycle back together?
I recently purchased a 1978 Honda CB400 from someone who had taken it apart with the intent to put it back together. They never got that far and sold it to me instead. So I have all the parts and a big box of bolts and such. My intention is to put it back together while learning about the bike so that I can repair it in the future. I have several repair manuals to walk me through the individual steps.
But I’m having a hard time deciding which pieces to put together first.
I’ve already cleaned all the parts and removed the rust and sanded and painted the gas tank.

Ah yes, buying a motorcycle in a box. This is a classic experience.
Personally, I like to start with the rolling chassis simply because it’s then easier to move around.
The wiring loom and cosmetics are next and the engine is last.
However you choose to do it, experience says that you can be 100% certain that your box of bits is incomplete: some part or parts will have gone awol in between the time the bike was disassembled and the time it landed in your basement.
